With some plants, it doesn’t pay to play frost chicken (Day 270) and, while the calendar may only recently have flipped round to October, already the overnight temperatures are taking a dive. I can speak with no great authority on the matter (the thermometer in the greenhouse has needed a new battery for a couple of weeks now), but the forecast is for not-quite-but-almost freezing. I dashed home from work, cleared a space, and ushered a rather motley crowd of louche-looking late season pelargoniums into the wheelbarrow (they had rather the air of drunken late-night revellers catching up good-naturedly with friends they’d not had the occasion to see for some time). I’m now sharing my study with them – the greenhouse itself being ever so slightly cooler than the fridge and in no way guaranteed to maintain the five degrees centigrade required as a bare minimum by the tender things. The spider plants are not looking impressed.
