Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Calatheas, some say, make for a fairly trouble-free houseplant, but I’ve always found them to be a little particular. I have stopped misting mine with unfiltered hard water (you can see the calciferous deposits on the leaves in the photo), though really I don’t think that bothered it over much. Rather it’s this kind of thing: they like light (but not too much), must always be wet (but not too wet), are fond of a warm room, but not a dry warm room. Sheesh. They are also, I’ve decided, quite hungry, and will reward the stingy feeder (that’s me) with smaller leaves than you’d ideally like. Mine will now have to wait until spring for a decent meal, but at least I’ve found a spot it seems to like – in the unused fireplace of the spare bedroom.
