Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
The gardener is in need of warming and, while engaged in the act of raking up leaves the body attains a comfortable working temperature, as soon as the rake is put down things turn distinctly chilly. And there are only so many steaming cups of tea one can drink before it starts to come out of the ears. All the while, the end-of-season bonfire pile has reached impressive heights – everything that can’t be composted, shredded or rotted down in water – suggesting the burning will begin any day now. This happens in small batches, away from the main pile lest any dozy animals have decided to hibernate within its margins. It’s a seasonal milestone, an infrequent, primal joy to watch the flames dance, hear the cracking of twigs, the hissing of water bubbling from cut stems, and smell the sweet blackberry crumble scent of burning brambles.
Read about what goes on the pyre in Bonfire of deplorables . Burn garden waste infrequently and responsibly – regulations for bonfires in the UK (in short, there’s no law against bonfires themselves, but causing a nuisance with one could land you in trouble) are here.
