Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It’s time to tame the acanthus, or at least, its aerial parts – getting to grips with its roots is something of a fool’s errand. But now the leaves are looking decidedly tatty, and the flower spikes are beginning to disintegrate, dropping chestnut-coloured berries and spiky bracts like large false, grey eyelashes all about. I think I reported earlier in the year (Day 195), with no little satisfaction, that my normally intransigent plant had produced a total of two flower spikes – it went on to crown this impressive achievement with a third (I imagine it’s finally running down the nutrient level in the soil after I unwisely manured it heavily before planting). The seed heads would be handsome enough to leave standing through the winter, if only they could be encouraged not to fall apart so. As it is, they’re bound for the bonfire, while the leaves will find a new home in the compost.
A year of garden coaching
I’m very excited about my new venture – it’s a way for me to work with more people than I can physically get around to, helping them to make the very best of their gardens in a way that suits the life they lead. If you’d like to find out more, please click here to book for a January 2020 start.
