Day 345: stinking iris

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The leaves of stinking iris Iris foetidissima certainly have a characteristic smell, though not one I’ve ever associated with roast beef, which gives it another of its common names. One of our two native iris species (the other being the taller yellow flag Iris pseudacorus), its flowers are typical of the genus in form though perhaps more restrained than you’d imagine. But its at this time of year when it makes its presence known, just as everything else is looking rather drab, the tripartite seed capsules split open to reveal bright orange seeds which makes its presence known from right across the garden.

A year of garden coaching

I’m very excited about my new venture – it’s a way for me to work with more people than I can physically get around to, helping them to make the very best of their gardens in a way that suits the life they lead. If you’d like to find out more, please click here to book for a January 2020 start.
