An Instagram retrospective of March 2018
Come the new month, come the snow. Usually in winter I can work through snow, as there's plenty of pruning work to be done above ground, but since it's almost spring most of these jobs are behind me, so the cold weather kept me indoors for a couple of days. But when I did get out, a bonfire certainly helped to keep the spirits up.
As frustrating as the late snow is, you’d have to be a complete misery guts not to see the beauty of it across the landscape.
Fortunately, as quickly as the snow came, it disappeared. No lengthy period of ice and slush...
... and the signs of spring were all around, albeit slightly later than last year.
And now the hellebores, still going...
...were joined by other indicators of the new season.
At which point, the beast returned, and it snowed again, even though by now we were into astronomical spring.
But finally, the flowers on the willow came out against a blue sky. Spring, it was almost safe to say, had arrived.
...even if some of the winter interest plants were still putting on a show.
All of this, as you can imagine, was enough to send anyone scurrying back in for a quick cuddle with a houseplant or three. It’s now a good time to start thinking about repotting houseplants, in part as a reward for surviving the low light and centrally heated atmosphere of winter.
And when the rain came (and boy, did it come), there were the dahlia tubers to check over and pot up.
How was March for you in the garden? I’d love to hear how you managed this tricky month, so let me know, either on twitter here or in the comments below.
