Day 287: spindle berry

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

From the soggy remnants of summer, the rich colours of autumn are just beginning to appear. Most notably outside my kitchen door, where a golden carpet of Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) leaves has appeared overnight, but it’s the October garb of its relative the European spindle tree (Euonymus europeaus) that I really look forward to seeing, and nowhere more so than on the variety ‘Red Cascade’. Green leaves turning bright scarlet might be considered sufficient to earn this smallish tree a place in the garden, but winged pink seed pods bursting open to reveal bright orange fruit seals the deal. One of the loudest and most unsubtle colour combinations in the garden all year, and I love it.

You can read more about the spindle tree here.
