Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Scratch the surface of my garden, and all manner of foreign objects begin to reveal themselves. When I first laid out the beds I discovered, barely a spit deep, a 2 metre square patch of glass sheeting, as if someone had flattened a greenhouse and then turfed it over. Fertile ground for crunching and swearing but ultimately, when efforts to extract the glass proved futile, I resolved to plant through the shattered panes and exercise extreme caution when working in the vicinity. This morning’s weeding turned up, in addition to the bucket load of crushed brick that even the most casual cultivation invariably disinters, a small pulley block and an old Bakelite plug. I’ve yet to discover anything remotely useful or interesting but, since in wishing for that I fear I’d be tempting Fate to provide me with a body to exhume, I think I’m ok with things as they stand.
