Day 21: sarcococca

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Today the rain stopped just sufficiently long to allow the birds a brief moment of song, and the smell of Christmas Box wetly to take flight. One of the redeeming features of January in the garden, whatever volatile compounds originate within the flowers of Sarcococca confusa seem prone to waterlogging, remaining on the planty equivalent of the tarmac until a break in the weather. As soon as the new year comes around (the common name is hopelessly previous), I aim a surreptitious and hopeful sniff in its general direction whenever I pass, but really, I needn’t bother. It’ll waft when it’s ready, not a moment before and, when it does, I won’t need to go searching for the scent.
