Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Crash. The sound of breaking terracotta is distinctive, and one I’ve become quite accustomed to this past year. Even in the relative shelter of the side return to our house, the wind – which seemed barely to drop for the entirety of 2020 – has a knack of whistling around the pots. This rarely presents a problem if they’re weighed down by a well-watered rootball, but occasionally on thirsty summer days or, as last night, during something approaching a gale, a gust will catch one and have its moment of fun. Thankfully, it doesn’t try this malarkey with the expensive pots but, even though any destruction of this kind should be upsetting, I often find myself enjoying the opportunity to check out the root structure, in this case noting the apparent reluctance of the polyanthus roots to colonise a cold and sodden lump of compost.
