Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Stealing time outdoors as the sun goes down, pruning and retying a shrub rose to itself. Some roses are better suited to the Jenny Barnes treatment than others – today’s specimen is most certainly one of the others, lacking that profusion of long, biddable stems so crucial to creating an even framework; but it doesn’t really matter. This process involves the kind of mindful work I can settle into for hours on end, and my main object is simply to get out here and move things along a little towards the ultimate goal of ever-so-slightly managed chaos that feels right for my own garden. Polished secateurs blades wink repeatedly back at me as they catch the fading light, and once more I’m glad of the Day-Glo green of my twine, even if nobody else is.
