Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It becomes something of a sport around now. You’ve probably already engaged in a spot if it yourself – peering closely at bare twigs for the faintest sign of swelling around the nodes, that tell-tale fattening that augurs the end of the dull days and the start of something brighter and more hopeful. Here, just outside the kitchen door, the black hydrangea is getting a little carried away with itself, the frost-blackening of unfurling leaf tips (on longer, and therefore more exposed, stems than the one pictured) confirming the wisdom of leaving the deadheading until milder conditions prevail. Until then, the fascination of nascent foliage is all.
