Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
A dull, mizzly and oddly mild January afternoon. Knees and fingers are generously besmirched with mud and, feeling in the need of a pick-me-up, I swing by the beds where we’ve left standing the skeletal remains of last year’s fennel. Someone (could be the birds, could be us) seems to have polished off most of the seeds, but there are still a few left, and it only takes one to do the job. One tiny, woody capsule, crushed between the teeth, sufficient to restore focus and sweep a refreshing breeze through that space between the ears – so good, it should probably be illegal. But, thankfully, isn’t.
