Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Winter trains the gardener to be keen-eyed in the quest for colour; those flashes of delight that brighten an otherwise sober outlook. A hellebore will make you work for your glimpse of optimism, but the effort is worthwhile – kneeling or, preferably, squatting (the ground here being sufficiently wet and heavy to retain the imprint of a thoughtlessly applied knee long after that particular object of articulation has departed the scene) to reach a flower and gently lift its head and, with that, peer into its freckled face. A squat and a stoop is a small price to pay, you tell your grumbling muscles as you rise.
