Day 31: a garden edit

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Raining all day – sat at my desk working on a book chapter, watching paragraphs emerge onto the screen, take shape, fill the space in such a manner as to influence how I feel about what came before, and what’s to follow. Growing faster now in directions I’d not originally intended for them to go. Rub eyes, make tea, pull on boots and brave the rain. Wandering along the path, I stop where I have a view of how the cotinus is growing into the amelanchier. Both bought and planted together – when was that... thirteen years ago? Fourteen? They’ve played nicely alongside one another for all this time, but now both are in need of a trim – a thinning for the amelanchier, cuts of a more radical kind for the cotinus. Afterwards there will be space, and air, and this border will read all the better for it.
