Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I’m starting to take an inventory of the houseplants – what’s looking good, what’s looking less than happy after a gloomy winter being frazzled by the central heating. It comes as no surprise that while the Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) is in fine fettle, the character referred to by my buddy Alice as ‘Princess Maidenhair’ (Adiantum capiluus-veneris) has, at long last, very definitely expired. And so, with the afternoon sun shining through the windows and spring repotting a few weeks off, I’ve been doing a little online shopping to swell the verdant ranks, always on the lookout for those plants that seem to get on with our particular brand of houseplant care. Though I have to confess to buying another Maidenhair fern – if that’s not a triumph of hope over experience, I don’t know what is.
