Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Today the sun shone, and a person could be forgiven for having entertained a belief in the imminent arrival of spring. The ground is beginning to dry, and even our bashful snowdrops seemed persuaded by the unseasonable warmth to let it all hang out. Craneflies danced in the last of the golden light slanting in from the west and, on the air, those twin virtues much entertained by gardeners at this time of year – faith, and hope; though it occurs to me that the biblical correspondent jumbled the order in his famous epistle. The theology is beyond me, but I can at least testify that in the garden, the first to arrive is hope – in bigger, better and brighter things to come – followed by faith that they’ll arrive in their allotted time. How charity fits in to the order can often be something of a puzzle, until you take a step back and realise that, in the best gardens, it’s the guiding principle.
