It occurred to me today, as I snuck up on a clump that looked particularly ripe for dividing, that there’s no plant that, once flowered, looks quite so morning-after-the-night-before as the snowdrop. The contrast between the delicate poise it exhibits for several weeks and the mad, post-pollination, crazy-haired banshee things currently staring back at me from the flowerbed, exhibiting not a little attitude, is something refreshing to behold. It feels as though they’ve really allowed themselves a good blowout, shaken everything loose and now, not giving a toss about how messy their leaves are or how dishevelled their petals appear, they’re scrabbling in their bags for their oyster cards and stuffing their faces with chips after a bloody good time out. I think they thoroughly deserved it.
