Day 83: to see you, nice

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

That there are flowers on the forsythia this week is testament not so much to my good planning as to the fact that I ignored the plant last year. Flowering on year-old wood, the best time to prune – and prune hard – is immediately after flowering, promoting a vigorous and frankly unruly response that makes more for great productivity the following spring than it does for order in the garden this year. But then, I remind myself, when did I ever worry about something being neat and tidy? I think I’m sensitive about this particular specimen as a previous owner planted it as a border hedge. Still, let the neighbours keep their side trim.
