Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Regularly enveloped in clouds of sweet, honeyed air at this end of March and, for some reason, always slightly surprised at the source. I think of Skimmia japonica as a reliable evergreen presence in the borders, berrying freely in winter if you have a hermaphrodite variety, or both male and female plants. Reason enough to give it room in the garden. And then there’s the scent – truly, one of the best things about the garden in early spring, and all the more so as it seems to come as an unexpected bonus. To this forgetful gardener, at least.
