Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
As gardeners, we spend an inordinate amount of time waiting for things we shove in the ground to grow away with gusto. (And while we’re waiting, it would do us good collectively to take a hard look at quite what we mean when we employ that trusty maxim, ‘right plant, right place’ since, when you interrogate the phrase, it becomes evident that, were we to do nothing, our gardens will fill themselves with just exactly those things.) It’s why we’re all so absurdly grateful at this time of year for those plants that show such unrestrained lust for life that you feel you could almost hear them stretching, expanding, unfurling, whether this new growth comes bursting up through the ground, as with paeonies, or thrusts itself outward with indecent vigour from sticks that have spent the winter months looking decidedly dead and, well... sticky, like the black elder, Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Eva’.
