Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I’m going to ignore, for the moment, the fact that it’s snowing again, and concentrate on what I originally came out into the garden to talk about, namely, the practice of thinning. As distinct from weeding, which is something you do when Mother Nature has taken it upon herself to gift you generously with plants she thinks would look wonderful in your beds and borders, this process is what you get up to when something you’ve decided yourself to grow is doing so well that it’s begun to expand its hold upon the space with a little too much enthusiasm. Just as the alliums (christophii, I think) have done here, where their conquest of this particular bed might account for why the hellebores were a little slow off the mark this year. I shall insist upon a tactical retreat to 2019 lines, give the paeonies a little breathing space, and brook no further excursions into neutral territories, though you have to feel a little sorry for the plants we introduce, bidding them to make themselves at home, but not too at home, expecting vigour, but always tempered with decorum. Maybe we should just let go and let grow a little more often.
