Day 98: snake's head fritillary

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

One of those plants that prompts me each spring, on seeing it everywhere as it comes into bloom, to ask myself why I’m still not growing it. The dusky allure of the snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) has always captivated me – the droop of the stem with its satin sheen, the chequerboard texture of the petals – but working at eye-level with a patch of it today in another garden I realise I prefer to see it in grass rather than in a flowerbed, and I’m just not convinced we have enough lawn to do it justice. Maybe this is a lack of imagination on my part, but perhaps I’m simply rendering due respect to a beautiful plant by acknowledging a twinned truth – it looks better in other people’s gardens, and I’m under no obligation to grow every plant that I love.
