Day 106: snowy mespilus

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Not every plant got the memo about spring being late this year – and that really shouldn’t be surprising. Some plants flower according to temperature – you might expect them to take note of the recent frosts – while others set their clocks by the length of available daylight (photoperiodism). It would appear that you can set your calendar by the bloom of the amelanchier (snowy mespilus or Amlanchier lamarckii), which has burst into flower bang in the middle of April, as it always does. I usually take full advantage of the setting sun to backlight the blossom, as I did on this post two years ago to the day, but I fancied a change yesterday evening. Given the chance to look more closely at the flowers, the familial link to both apples and pears (and, more distantly, to plums) seems clear.
