Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
No less than four brake-stomping encounters with cock pheasants yesterday, each of them displaying a markedly cavalier attitude to their own continued survival. And so it felt as if the daffodils were taunting me when I got to work in the morning, most of the yellow varieties having faded for the season, but the pheasant's eye (Narcissus poeticus) going strong under a bright, spring day sun. Some people, I know, are in the habit of sniffing every flower they meet, almost as an involuntary action; it's not an impulse I have and, for some reason, I never think to sniff a daff. Which is a great shame, as this particular kind is renowned for having one of the finest scents.
After almost ten years, I have worked my last day in this windy garden with its view over the North Downs. I shall miss it, but there are exciting things on the horizon which I hope to be able to talk about soon, and some things need to make way if others are to happen.
