Day 104: splinters

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Feeling like a pincushion just now, having spent the morning battling an unruly, neglected climbing rose while – deaf to my protestations – chickens pecked away at my boots. Thankfully, the footwear proved itself to be entirely beak proof but, while my gloves may well have been up to resisting the thorns of the rose (technically, ‘prickles’), one of life’s cruel ironies is that it’s impossible to tie a knot in twine with anything other than bare hands. They who spend their time compiling lists of equipment essential to the gardener never seem to include tweezers, sterilised needles, and a small magnifying lens through which to peer at the evil chunk of wood lately removed from your flesh. It’s really most remiss of them.
