Day 118: the miniaturist

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

These last few days of April are something of a delight for the miniaturist. Buds bursting in agonisingly slow motion (I’d be tempted to stand and watch, rooted to the spot, if it wasn’t for the certainty that a passing blackbird would mistake me for a medium-sized shrub and chose to build a nest in my beard), contents unfurling, small yet perfectly-formed leaves orienting their surfaces towards the light. I’ve been enjoying the daily progress of the purple-leaved ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Lady in Red’, handily positioned by the back gate so as to be the last thing I see as I leave and the first to greet me on my return. I fear it’s going to demand a permanent planting hole this spring, though – unless the gift of a larger pot and some rich ericaceous compost can convince it to stay put.
