Day 119: garden overwhelm

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

There’s a degree of garden overwhelm around just now, inescapable in casual conversations with friends, exchanges with folk on social media, as well as something identified by many of the gardeners I coach. Much of it arises from dissonance between the expectations we hold – of ourselves and of our gardens – and the time and energy we have available to expend in these areas. While few of us are in a position to do it all and do it perfectly, the solution isn’t to embrace mediocrity, but rather to review our expectations, to be kinder to ourselves, and to embark on the search for excellence within a much narrower field.

Today I’ve been both magnificently late sowing tomatoes and sweet peas, and ever so slightly early sowing French and borlotti beans. Excellence, I fear, is likely to give each a wide birth in my garden this year, but the practice and the presence will accumulate results. Today’s recipe for overcoming garden overwhelm: narrow your focus, be kind to yourself. Show up.
