Day 146: pinching out dahlias

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’m not growing dahlias here this year. Life, and its antipodes, rather got in the way at the time I should have been potting them up and, much as I love them, I’m quite enjoying not having to be on constant slug patrol (had I been, the ones left in the ground might be showing a little life!). Had I been bringing some on, the last week of May is when I’d begin to pinch out the top few pairs of leaves to persuade the plant to produce more flowering sideshoots; bushier plants, more flowers – it’s a fabulous return for a couple of minutes finger-and-thumb action. But none of that for me in 2021. This year, I shall be enjoying dahlias in other people’s gardens.
