Day 145: elder

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Everything in the garden looks fresh just now – even the elder, coming into bud. As big a fan of Sambucus nigra as I am, it can’t be denied that the elder tree spends much of its life looking like it’s just been dragged through the hedge (of which it’s a key part) backwards. In winter, its a mess of twigs and deeply furrowed corky bark, strangely light and slightly slimy in the wet and no use whatsoever for a fire. In spring, the leaves appear, smelling of cat pee. But the floral froth of June and the rich, dark berries of September – bringing us respectively cordials and champagnes, then syrups and jellies – ensure its place in our hearts. And maybe there’s something about its scrappiness that we admire, too.
