Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I’m all for a bit of mutualism, in the garden as much as anywhere else. Quite what the ants are getting up to on the ripening buds of the paeonies is often a cause for alarm, but it turns out, it’s an entirely harmonious relationship, albeit a transactional one. The ants are attracted to the sugary nectar seeping out of the flower buds which, in turn, receive the protection of the ants from less beneficial sap-sucking insects. Once the flowers open, the ants depart, trotting off in a column to go and spend their wages on Iron Bru or Fanta or some such. I’m sure the paeonies know exactly what they’re doing.
