Day 158: how June begins

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

This is how it begins. The swaying and the sparkling of late June – golden oat grass (Stipa gigantea) catching the sun, pink mallow flowers on impossibly tall and wiry stems (Althea cannabina), dancing in the breeze against the dark background of the yew hedge, while bees buzz around their feet, in and out of the bell-like flowers of Sicilian honey garlic (Nectaroscordum siculum) – all best appreciated while lying on the grass and gazing up through the plants at a clear blue sky. Just now, it’s all green, and barely up to my knees. But everything grows apace this month.
