Day 159: underplanting roses

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I should be looking at the rosebuds. We’ve waited for them long enough and now, as June gets into her stride, here they are, fattening by the day, offering up tantalising glimpses of the petals inside. And yet, pleased as I am to see them, my eye is drawn downwards, not in despair at the mess of gone-over narcissus foliage, seeding forget-me-nots past their prime, half-blown dandelion clocks and burgeoning buttercups, but in delight at the weedy tapestry spread out at the feet of the shrubs. Part of my brain is telling me it’s time to pull this lot out, but another voice – stronger by the day, is telling me to chill out and enjoy it for a few days longer.
