Day 169: the weight of water

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The storm came in the night, rain in torrents, thunder, lightning – the full schamozzle – and gave the garden a good seeing to. And the borders, being now in full leaf, caught the rain as it fell, and swayed under the weight of a fortnight’s rain delivered in a matter of hours. Things pinged that shouldn’t go ping and roses – mostly – came unhitched, the bittersweet above the kitchen window breaking free of its mooring and rendering the light through north facing window dimmer even than usual. A soggy morning restoring order with wire and twine, while paeonies and alliums lay, drunkenly sprawled, awaiting a kindly hand.
