Day 168: pause, please

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

That distinctly-remembered excitement of rosebuds on an evening walk along the garden path can surely be no more distant than a week ago? And yet here we are, petals confettying the ground and secateurs slicing the heads off stems in an effort to concentrate the plant’s attention on more, and still more later flowers for the bees, and only a matter of days away from Midsummer. This is the point at which we need to pause the garden, to freeze time and, if we can’t manage that, contrive somehow to experience everything in all its fulness, drink it down, breathe it deeply, look upon it knowingly and maybe, in the process, to become more at one with the natural world as she expresses herself in our back yards. Because it’s all going too quickly, and I have made a promise to those I’ve loved and lost not to let it pass me by.
