Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I park the car badly. Since the switch for the door mirrors broke off, I’m having to hang out of the driver’s door as I back up in order to check the wheels against the kerb and, as I edge closer, I convince myself that this must be how Brian Harvey managed to run himself over (although that apparently involved a baked potato). Handbrake on, I fling the door wide open upon just the kind of planting that it’s impossible for a human to do, a muddle of escaped meadow grass, campanulas in blue and white, green alkanet, a sycamore seedling, purple toadflax and nipplewort, all hunkered into the bottom metre of a threadbare hedge which might, or might not, be forsythia. But forget the shrub; it’s this motley collection of stragglers that I find so charming. Doubtless most would want to tidy this up with a strimmer, but that would be a shame.
