Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
There are distinct benefits to running your own business, as well as some well-publicised pitfalls to avoid. One of the less frequently talked about joys of being your own boss is the ability to choose who you work for and, where necessary, to give a client the heave-ho when it’s clear that they’re not meeting your expectations, and that working for them isn’t the mutually beneficial experience you’d envisaged. In the past I’ve walked out of graphics gigs for the studio’s unethical approach to other people’s copyright, and parted company with gardening clients who viewed paying for my work as an optional activity. But I distinctly remember having to give the boot to one quite established client who steadfastly refused to view poppies as anything but weeds, and remained stubbornly unmoved by the joyful sight of honeybees frolicking in the sunny, open cups of their flowers. There’s no working with that kind of thinking, and I like to view this severing of ties as “giving someone the pollen sac”, after the structures in which bees carry about their foraged treasure. In that case, it seemed particularly appropriate.
