Day 183: potato flower

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Spuds. Earthy, reliable, decidedly subterranean – that much I think I always knew. But I remember being distinctly non-plussed when, late in the season, I noticed that the petals had dropped from the flowers and that the ripening fruit bore more than a marked resemblance to a tomato; at the time, I knew nothing of the nightshades (genus Solanum), and had never really thought about what a potato got up to above the ground. Turns out, their flowers are almost prettier than they have any right to be.
