Day 184: when weeding goes wrong

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Sometimes, you can be too good at a thing. Weeding is something at which I’m deeply proficient; I enjoy it, which is just as well since, for the past decade, it’s occupied a significant part of my working day. But you can take a thing too far, to the extent that your endeavours to regain control by removing Plants That You Didn’t Put There can have unintended consequences. I’ve written before about the detrimental implications of over-zealous weeding upon the progress of one’s hellebore collection, but I have to remind myself at this time of year about biennials. If, in July, I find myself feeling rather smug about having weeded a patch of the garden particularly thoroughly, I can be almost certain that I’ve just wiped out next year’s display of, for example,  foxgloves and honesty. Neatness doesn’t always pay dividends.
