Day 186: surprised by chicory

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

One advantage to being slightly slapdash in the garden (and there are several that I could enumerate, and probably shall, another time) is the gift of unexpected flowers. I first saw the steely blue flowers of chicory as the plants lolloped through a meadow planting at Hever Castle, but here, today, they’re greeting us in the veg patch as we weed and plant and edge. A half-hearted admonishment for having been less than scrupulous when pulling out the winter-sown plants that had finally begun to bolt, but really – with their wonderful, frilly, square-edged petals that look as though someone more conscientious than I has been out here, painstakingly snipping the edges off – a lovely reward for sloppiness.
