Day 187: closely planted

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Following a model of close planting, or ‘cramming it all in’, as I like to think of it, can often yield a pleasant surprise. I’ve just discovered the rose ‘Olivia Rose Austin’ in flower – I’d almost forgotten she was there. Granted, had I gotten around to cutting back the geraniums around her, she’d not be looking quite so crammed in between these and Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl’ but, now enjoying her second year in this garden, she’s clearly got her feet down into the soil and is happy to concentrate her energies on producing the kind of gorgeous floral display that first drew her to my attention on Polly Wilkinson’s ‘Naturecraft’ garden at Hampton Court a couple of years ago. It doesn’t always go quite to plan, though – there’s a precious ‘Munstead Wood’ rose completely buried under the ever-expanding foliage of the acanthus just now.
