Day 188: Rose ‘Lady of Shalott’ – update

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Two years on and this glorious orange rose has settled in, though the short-lived perennial wallflowers (‘Winter Sorbet’, I think) that bobbed and chattered about her feet have shuffled off. Some gardening decisions you live to regret, but planting this rose was definitely one of the better choices I’ve made – seemingly untroubled by pests or disease, she’s happily popping out one flower after another apparently unconcerned about standing in the shade of a tall hedge to the south. If I could find a specimen of Lady Emma Hamilton to complement her, with her red-toned stems and foliage and similar coloured blooms, I would be happy, I think – though I feel the literary Lady would shame her real-world counterpart with her superior constitution.
