Summer has arrived in time for this year’s Big Butterfly Count in the UK, which began on Friday and runs until 8th August. I’ve yet to make my records, having spent yesterday’s time outside hiding from the scorching sun up a ladder, head stuck in a tangle of climbers, bamboo and shrub, cutting my way out by disentangling the drapery as a precursor to some more significant pruning. Too hot for much of that just now, though, but perfect weather if you’re a butterfly, looking to be counted. It’s a pleasant way of spending 15 minutes as well as an opportunity to be part of a citizen science project that contributes to monitoring our national biodiversity. Many more of these large cabbage whites alighting on the verbena, though, and I may even get around to netting the brassicas.
