A day, if ever there were one, to make like a hydrangea and head for the shade. I spent much of the day in the company of Hydrangea aborescens ‘Annabelle’, a perennial gardeners’ favourite in spite of her habit of flopping about all over the place; though to be entirely fair, flopping about was what I felt like doing after a few hours of chopping, snipping, and tidying. And I’m not sure Annabelle will have been too pleased with me, since the more I worked, the more shade I cut away – she’s now decidedly more exposed to the glare of the sun. That’s fine, I can almost here her say, but you’re going to have to fetch me a drink whenever I fancy it (which will be often), or you know what’s going to happen...
