Day 202: purple party in the herb patch

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

There’s a party going on in the herb patch, which is alive with pollinating insects and resplendent in shades of purple and lilac. Was it planted with this colour in mind? Well, no, but these shades tend to predominate in the plants we gather around us for their culinary and medicinal qualities, though I’m not entirely convinced that both the field scabious (Knautia arvensis) or the round-headed garlic (Allium sphaerocephalon) didn’t find there way here according to their aesthetics, in spite of the former being used historically as a remedy for coughs,  sore throats and skin conditions, and the latter being, well... an onion. Primarily, they’re here to provide food for bees. Party on.
