Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Gravity and physics took a toll on my study today. Throw in some slightly suspect DIY skills, a recent growth spurt and a watering regime that’s been of necessity more conscientious than usual, and the little shelves supporting the fussiest of our houseplants didn’t really stand a chance. Crash. These are the plants that like the light and the warmth, but not too much, and benefit from having their feet moist, but not too wet – with the exception of the maidenhair fern, who you couldn’t drown if you tried (this is, however, the only position in the house in which she seems to thrive – on a north facing wall by a west facing window). Thankfully, though the pots weren’t so lucky, the plant casualties were few: two leaves (thankfully with petioles attached) from the variegated Monstera deliciosa, and one from Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, both of which I’ve been meaning to propagate from cuttings and had yet to get around to. I could have done without the crockery smashing, but at least that’s something ticked off the to-do list.
