Day 207: Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Thunder rumbling from a threatening sky and the first heavy drops of intent falling on me, I’m squatting in a border with a camera to my face, entranced by the heleniums. Draw up a chair and sit with me a while as they transform surely before our eyes – now a tiny pincushion surrounded by a Kermit fringe of green sepals, now garlanded about with scalloped-edged scarlet petals, golden pollen-clad anthers emerging in a ring beneath a domed chocolate lid, now flames dancing beneath a sphere of bright yellow and deepest brown. ‘Moerheim Beauty’, this cultivar, almost certainly my favourite, and well worth risking a soaking for.
