Day 208: summer growth

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Everything is growing like it’s going out of fashion, that last push to bulk up before the light truly begins to fade. The hedge outside my window, has already trimmed three times this year and looking quite respectable a fortnight ago, has now turned into quite a different kind of animal – shaggy doesn’t begin to describe it. Why bother, when flowering and fruiting is done for the year? More foliage, is the answer – each leaf a tiny factory using the energy of the sun to smash electrons from water and begin the process of photosynthesis that manufacture the sugars needed to fuel next year’s growth. It’s all rather wonderful, even if it’s shaping up to be quite the clipping job for me in a week or so.
