Day 222: Stromanthe sanguinea ‘Triostar’

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Almost certainly I’m on a hiding to nothing with this plant. But... just look at it. I was powerless to resist the large leaves with their green and cream variegation, a rich, deep pink underneath. This is Stromanthe sanguinea ‘Triostar’, often mislabelled as Calathea ‘Triostar’, which should suggest the reason behind my trepidation – because calatheas either don’t like me, or they hate my house, and perhaps both. I’ve just about nursed a fishbone calathea back into a state where it could be accepted in polite company after years of sulking (both of us), though technically, that’s not really a calathea either, but Ctenanthe burle-marxii ‘Amabilis’, another member of the prayer plant family Marantaceae. Thankfully, there’s a prayer plant on my bookshelf, Maranta leuconeura ‘Fascinator Tricolour’, that has always done exceptionally well, so there’s just a chance the new arrival will thrive. I do hope so – it’s spectacular.
