Day 223: Lindheimer’s beeblossom

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Lindheimer’s beeblossom, or gaura to many of us, was reclassified as Oenothera lindheimeri back in 2007 – when ferreting about in its DNA unearthed genetic markers that revealed it to be a close relative of the evening primrose (Oenothera biennis). Potato Potahto. It’s all very interesting, but to me it’s still gaura, and still an essential resident of the mid to late summer border, its long wiry stems and butterfly-like blooms catching the light and waving us gently towards the autumn.
